Why Bush's Splurge Is Doomed To Fail

All that Bush is doing is trying to stall for time. That's been his style all of his life. If you asked his mother, she would probably tell you that his entire childhood was a series of "just 5 more minutes"-excuses.

In six months, when Iraq is no closer to stability or normalcy or able to provide for its own security, Bush will argue to increase the money for the Iraq war and want to keep U.S. troops there (Bush never had any intention of pulling troops and U.S. bases out, not ever) because, he will insist, "the surge is working."

The proof of the surge's success would be if no security forces, not U.S. and not Iraqi forces, were needed to prevent violence. Meeting violence with more violence has never been a winning formula; it only creates more insurgents and makes them more determined.

Until we have a government with policies that are populist in approach and environmentally sensitive, we are never going to be able to relax and be free from concern over our safety and security.

What's the Matter with Kentucky?

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) = 'Troop Killer'

There's really no way around it.

Members of the Senate who, in their slavish devotion to George W. Bush are blocking the only procedural means to bringing the war in Iraq to an end, are not supporting the troops. They are responsible for U.S. troops' deaths and injuries.

By aiding Bush's grand stall, they give Bush cover as he marches us into yet another war, this time with Iran.

Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) from the floor of the Senate today:

Part 2

Mitch McConnell, minority leader in the Senate, is up for reelection in 2008. The good people of Kentucky deserve better than McConnell representing them.

Is Joe Lieberman Laying the Foundation to Break with the Democratic Caucus . . . .

. . . . And give control of the Senate to the Republicans?

Joe Lieberman questions Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Peter Pace, during the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Bush's plan to escalate the war in Iraq:

Lieberman doesn't exactly question these men, but rather asks leading questions that are supportive of Bush's rhetoric about the planned increase of troops to Iraq and dismissive of some Democrats' proposals for the war in Iraq. Lieberman skates along the edge of acceptable party etiquette when talking about policies coming from members of his own party -- but then Lieberman is no longer a Democrat, and owes them no loyalty. The loyalty he shows to Bush, however, is palpable.

If Democrats introduce legislation to stop Bush from escalating the war in Iraq, will Joe bolt from the Democratic Caucus and hand control over the Senate to the Republicans? It's not like this wasn't predictable.
